This is the official review of the UEFA 2004 European Championships and what a tournament it has been. From the very first game there was high drama with the hosts suffering a surprise defeat to Greece. In Group B England looked to have defeated the French until the final minutes when the magic feet of Zidane scored not once but twice. Group C went down to the wire, Sweden and Denmark needed to draw 2-2 for both teams to make the Quarter Finals and put Italy out of the competition. It couldn't possibly happen...but it did. Group D was expected to be hotly contested and it produced arguably the best game of the tournament when the Czech Republic came back from two goals down to defeat the Dutch 3-2.

In the Quarter Finals penalties knocked out the English and Greece continued to defy the odds by eliminating the current Champions, France. It was back to penalties as the Dutch held their nerve against Sweden, while the Czech Republic had the smoothest passage as they rolled over Denmark becoming the tournament favourites in the process. This was not to last. After Portugal confirmed their place in the final with a confident performance over Holland, the Czech Republic failed to halt the march of the Greeks, losing to the first silver goal of the tournament.

And so to the final. The first game of the tournament also became the last. Portugal and Greece faced a re-match, the result was the same, Greece, the underdogs, ruined the hosts party, defending their lead heroically and re-writing Greek Mythology along the way.

This is a great reminder of a tournament which was full of drama and surprises.
