The season got off to a disastrous start, culminating in a 4-1 loss at home to Sunderland, after Shearer had been left on the bench. Gullit inevitably left the club, and Newcastle were looking for yet another manager. Enter Bobby Robson.
The first game at home under Bobby Robson was an 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, with Shearer (whose body language had completely transformed) scoring five goals.
Then came Europe and the UEFA Cup and a win over CSKA Sofia and FC Zurich before rather unluckily going out to a good Roma side. They then remained unbeaten for almost 2 months leading up to Christmas, after going out of the Worthington Cup 2-0 to Birmingham at the first hurdle.
Newcastle thrashed Spurs 6-1 in the FA Cup 3rd round reply, and after tricky away wins against Blackburn and Tranmere, looked good for a third consecutive FA Cup final appearance. In a close game, Newcastle eventually lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the semi-final.
A brilliant 3-0 home win over Manchester United included great goals from Shearer and Ferguson. The season was essentially over after the semi-final loss, but fear of relegation had long gone, and an new optimism was emerging for next season.
All this action and more, including Shearer's 300th career goal, are captured on this official season video review.
