Description
From humble beginnings 111 years ago, Newcastle united rapidly became a mighty football force and dominated the early years of the 20th Century. Three times League Champions and five times FA Cup finalists between 1905 and 1911, the foundation of a unique footballing institution was moulded. They were the great days of men like Colin Veitch and Bill McCracken, and in the century since, there have been many more such legends.

But dominance has been partnered by decline: after the great Edwardian years, and the FA Cup and League title of the '20's, United were relegated for the first time in 1934. Stan Seymour rebuilt the club, and in the 1950's came the glory era of three FA Cup triumphs in five years. Heroes like Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell and Joe Harvey bestrode the St James' Park pitch and vast crowds flocked to watch.

Again, though, triumph was followed by disaster, with relegation in 1961. Harvey, captain of the '50's, became manager of the '60's and led the club back to Division One in 1965. Within three years United had qualified for Europe, and remarkably won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 at the first attempt. One Centre Forward icon, Wyn Davies, was replaced by another, Malcolm MacDonald, in 1971, and two Wembley Cup finals followed, between which Joe Harvey left, before relegation came again in 1978.

Four years later, the sensational arrival of Kevin Keegan sparked a new age. But the return to the top flight in 1984 was followed by disintegration as top players left and the club slid back into Division Two in 1989. With United on the brink of Division Three in 1992, and St James' Park only half complete, Sir John Hall took over as Chairman, Keegan returned as manager, and the glory days were back. Since climbing into the Premier League in a blaze of glory in 1993, United have remained a force in the land. Keegan's shock departure in 1997 was followed by two FA Cup Final appearances under Kenny Dalglish and Ruud Gullit in 1998 and 1999. Then, as decline threatened again and Gullit quit, Bobby Robson - now Sir Bobby - came home from abroad to raise the team to the power it is today in a rebuilt stadium fit to rank alongside the finest in the world.

Narrated by Roger Tames.
