The antics of rugby players after a match are legendary. On the 1974 tour of South Africa, British lions, Fergus Slattery and Dick Milliken, 'borrowed' a Cadillac to get back to the team hotel - only to discover Rhodesian Prime Minister in the back! When Irishman, Willie Anderson, after a good night out, 'liberated' an Argentinian flag on a tour of that country, he was thrown in jail - for several months! Then there was the time that Scotland's captain, Gavin Hastings, made a post-match speech in Paris which was 'translated' into French by a team-mate - who claimed Hastings had spoken about taking his wife upstairs and making mad, passionate love to her.
All these stories and more are packed into R is for Rugby. There are stories about the players, managers, referees, pundits and fans. And there are the inevitable gaffes too. "Dusty Hare kicked 19 of the 17 points." claimed commentator, David Coleman. Gareth Edwards once related: "I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body."
You can also marvel at the rugby facts and figures this book presents. Do you know who scored the fastest try (in under 10 seconds from the kick-off)? And which match was abandoned when the scoreboard was struck by lightning?
Plus there is an inspiring or memorable photograph on virtually every page and the added attraction of witty cartoons by Steve Gammond and Pete Neame.
Please note: R is for Rugby contains strong language.
