From its humble beginnings in 1870, the England Football team has emerged to become one of the most highly regarded in the world, and has been graced by many of the greatest individuals ever to have played the game. From the first footballing Icons Tom Finney and Stanley Matthews, to modern day heroes David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, many have strived to earn a place in the team that embodies the spirit of football like no other national side.

From the stalemate that resulted from the very first International fixture versus Scotland in 1872, the England team has experienced highs and lows that have kept the nation on tenterhooks for over a century, with the finest hour undoubtedly arriving as Geoff Hurst's goal nestled in the back of the German net to ensure that Bobby Moore would lift the Jules Rimet trophy in front of a packed Wembley Stadium in May, 1966.

In a decade by decade account, witness curious decisions from Russian Linesmen, Banks' breathtaking save against a 1970 Brazil team, the fastest ever World Cup goal from Bryan Robson in '82, Gazza's heartbreak in 1990, the incredible 5-1 demolition of Germany in 2002, and many more of the memorable moments that have gripped the nation, including the route to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany which saw England achieve a seeded place in the tournament.

The amazing tale, recounts the development of the 'Three Lions' and features first hand accounts of those who have proudly earned their caps over the years, including amongst others, legendary Captains Bobby Moore, Alan Shearer, and Gary Lineker, who provide a rare insight into the emotion involved in pulling on the famous shirt.

This is an update of The Official History of England, first released in 2004.
