Description
Hoddle passes to Waddle who sends it wide for Wright. He passes two players and then slips it through to Cole who finds Keegan in the corner. Keegan crosses and Gascoigne heads in a goal. Everybody has their dream England football team, now with this new book you can compile endless best elevens. This one is a forward line-up based on England players who have had hit records.

England Player by Player covers all 1140 footballers who have been awarded caps for England since the first international in 1872 to the one against Argentina in 2005. For each player, there is information about his date and place of birth (where known), date and place of death (if appropriate and where known), the position he played, the clubs he played for during his career, details of his debut and the total number of appearances and goals. Then, a brief biography gives further details of his career and life.

Take Reginald Halsey Birkett, for example. Born in 1849, he played in the FA Cup Final in 1879 and 1880 and made his one appearance for England against Scotland. A goalkeeper with a strong kick, he had previously played in the first rugby international in 1871.

John Sutcliffe was another goalkeeper. He played for Bolton Wanderers, Millwall, Manchester United, Plymouth Argyle and Southend United. He had five appearances for England, making his debut in 1893 against Wales. Oh, and he too was capped as an England rugby union player.

There's a theme here and it's completed by Charles Plumpton Wilson. An all-round sportsman, Wilson won Blues for cricket, debuted for England against Scotland in 1884 and was capped for the England rugby union team.

This is the sort of intriguing information that England Player by Player reveals every time you open it. You could also find out which goalkeeper wore glasses and which players went on to become vicars. And do you remember that Gareth Southgate, who has 57 England caps, missed a penalty in the European championship semi-final in 1996?

England Player by Player has been meticulously researched by author, Graham Betts. An Artist & Repertoire Manager for the Pickwick Group, Betts has been a regular writer for numerous magazines and publications. He has also been a contributor to various books on music and football and has had several published under his own name.
